I washed you and me out of my sheets today
Double cold cycle, double detergent
Just a tad of fabric softener and a brief trip through the dryer,
Tucked back into a bed that aches for you to take up three-quarters of it still.
Torn off the walls and placed safely in a manila folder
Lay the poems, the songs, the brief riddles and conversations of love.
Was I what you wanted or was I just proof of your lack of wires?
Congratulations, you’re not powered by double-As,
And thanks, no longer am I.
When we met, the sun was setting
Was that my cue to run and hide?
Did we only function well during the early hours of the morning
While you snored quietly and I stared up at the poster on your ceiling?
As I slipped out to go to work, did you turn over searching for my
Then-fifteen-pounds-heavier-body?
Did your eyes even open as I kissed you goodbye,
Or did you smile, as I shut the door gently behind me?
Here’s a truth: a lack of you next to me keeps me cold,
Keeps me distant, detached, icy,
Shivering under a rainbow, fans blowing to rid the silence you left.
The snows are coming, and caves get frigid in the winter.
So we’ve placed our hearts in freezers,
Mine just a few degrees chillier.
Did you know that when placed in warmth, ice cracks?
Not in pretty, liberating ways, but in harsh loud crackles.
The beginning came and went,
I saw light then, I saw love
Did you see me?
Did the thin ice melt, leaving a pool of happiness?
Or did it build up more from fear?
Was I really ever what you wanted?
So maybe you didn’t feel true love,
Does that really have to be thrown in my face, since you know I did?
So I’m not here holding a leash, and guess what, I never was
You’ve always been free, but you had no problem placing yourself in shackles
Only to break them once I attached them to myself.
Go on, here’s your life, enjoy it without me
Since asking you to let me be a part of it was just too much.

Author's Comments

I wrote this just about exactly a month ago, and it in no way reflects how I feel right now. However, looking back on it, I think it's actually semi-okay literature and felt like uploading it.

I just re-read it and it's amazing.
I have a book group going, and if we do a poetry thing, would you mind me reading this?
Props to you.
